Kinja'd!!!

We have had a power failure. It started at a little after 1 am, and it woke me up. I have suffered for many years with sleep apnea, which has been treated effectively with CPAP. But no power, no CPAP, which means no sleep. I am particularly afraid to sleep without it, as apnea puts a strain on the heart. So I am sitting in the dark, waiting for power, and listening to Pumpkin move around.

You need a backup generator. A permanently installed, automatically transferring one. My dad sells, installs, and services Generac generators, so if you have any questions, let me know.

I too have sleep apnea. I can’t sleep without my CPAP even if I wanted to. I even take it camping. My dad hooked me up with a free older generator when a customer wanted to upgrade. It’s awesome.

I also got virtually no sleep. Though that was just my own restlessness.

Amazon prime passes the time well, I’d imagine doubly so with a cat on your lap.

If I was up at 1 AM and couldn’t sleep, was sober, and had nothing to do the next day, I would grab the keys and go for a drive.

CPAP brothers & sisters in arms! I second the ideal of a generator. If that’s not an option, a UPS preferably made by CyberPower, or the mfg optional portable battery would be good substitutes.

FOr me, i always take 1mg of melatonin and 900mg of valerian root to help me stay asleep. And if all else fails, I have a cheapo “snoring mouthpiece” to use.

I joined team CPAP about 2 years ago. I still kind of hate it though.

Man, that sucks. I imagine there is no provision on your machine for some sort of external backup source (a car battery, a powerful UPS or whatever?) How’s that for product design?!

On the other hand you have Pumpkin with you. Cats are very soothing but you don’t want to relax too much either. Try to play a bit with her.

+1 on the generator w/automatic transfer...they make them to use natural gas or propane, so no gasoline involved and they are fully automatic.

Or, just get a UPS/battery backup and turn off the beeping alerts.

Well you don’t need any special provision for a UPS, since the UPS would just have a normal socket, though you’d of course need to check you were getting a large enough battery, and make sure you had some way of turning off the beeping when power is lost.

About 5 months for me. Not too bad, at least now I can sleep on my back and not snore.

Very true, you would actually plug the device into the UPS. Got confused for a while, thanks.

Still I would imagine there should be a way of connecting some kind of large external battery to the CPAP, as a last resort in case the UPS has gone bad due to power surges etc.

I accept that it’s good for me, but it takes all of the joy out of falling asleep, not to mention it’s bad for my relationship. No more late night chats as you drift off to sleep. Now it’s just “welp, time to put this thing on my face and be miserable.”

The battery backup thing doesn’t really work for a full night’s sleep ... well, I didn’t have success with that. Maybe batteries have gotten good enough in the last six years.

I hated it for the first few months, but I’ve gotten to love it. I sleep SOOOO much better than I used to. I still wish I didn’t need it, but oh well.

My dad has sleep apnea, and has had heart rhythm issues in the past... and we’re “up a holler” where we lose power at least once a winter and often a time or two in the spring and fall. He has a CPAP that runs off 12V, so it just gets hooked up to a car battery...

I take a melatonin once in a blue moon or so. I usually don’t have much trouble falling asleep, or going back to sleep if I wake up to pee.

I dislike that it kind of forces me to sleep on my back. I’d rather be on my side, but that’s more difficult with my cpap.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but it also very much interferes with, uh, romantic encounters.

I’m a side sleeper, I don’t have a problem being on my side with it on.

Yeah, that other part is true.

Role play, and pretend you’re Bane.

I’ll be sure to suggest that to my better half.

Really though, it just kills spontaneity.

Didn’t realize they drew that much power. Some quick research shows there are some DC solutions, but they aren’t off-the-shelf. A suitably sized UPS gets expensive.

The Generac 7.5kw models are under $2000 now (labor not included!!) so that’s probably a better way to go.

Kinja'd!!!1

Sure, but that’s not the problem.

I get that it’s good for me to have a cpap, but I don’t really feel much better. If it wasn’t for my better half, I would have smashed it with a baseball bat, “Office Space” style a long time ago. I’d be happier without it.

Yeah, mine draws just under 200 watts continuously. With the smart switches they have now, even those little Generacs make a house infinitely more livable in a power outage. I’ve got an old 8kw with the old style transfer switch that made you pick and choose what circuits are on it. That can run my high efficiency AC unit, or my furnace blower, my fridge, my internet, and enough lights to make a power outage just a minor inconvenience.
